I had two calls this week from customers who have smelt gas with the boilers being the nearest appliance to smell area. ( Baxi system and Ferroli Tempra system,) I done a soundness which showed no drop , I sprayed the burner pressure test point no show, The rails on the burner all lit, ANY IDEAS.

buy a gas sniffer and if there is no leak inside boiler check flue, a tightness test wont test anything after the gas valve so you dont know if they are leaking, you could operate the boiler and spray the joints to see if there is any sign of a leak.

check for poor ignition on appliance, allowing some gas out through flue system?(smell of gas through vent/window) some baxi's tend to do this.

will you be able to smell gas while boiler was working,or is the smell happens only when the boiler starts. Could be poor ignition as AW mentioned

There is a free and effective service available 24hrs of the day who are there to cover smells of gas ... 0800 111999 Point your customer towards the Gas Emergency services. We can only test the interior pipework.

it could be the gas valve letting by or you could check the flue with a FGA

a tightness test would of showed that up though, but it can be a leak on the other side of the gas valve which a TT wont show up and you would have to spray joints with boiler in operation.

invest in a gas sniffer though my kane one was £55 and its payed for itself many times

I have had a insulation panel fall on the burner which can be a cause of a gas smells etc

Smell gas..? Call free 0800111999....the problem is that you might go to investigate the leak and it could be coming from outside/upstream of the ECV/from a neighbours property...etc..so you go away, say nothing found..and erm...there might be still something happening. I wonder if there would be any liabilities if you gave them the ok but subsequently, something happened?

no liability I dont believe , I replaced a anaconda on a friday night and they had to evacuate a few houses the following morning due to a gas leak, fortunately nothing to do with me
