was doing a safety check on a friends boiler and all seemed fine, heat input, pressures (burner & working, combustion ratio and ppm all ok, I done everything. I only got my ticket 3 months ago so still finding my feet and despite this boiler passing all tests it smells of gas when you run dhw, what could this be and why would it pass the safety checks? Boilers a potterton performa combi, cheers

What..you mean there is a smell of gas around the boiler when its firing or there is a whiff of gas at the flue? Have you got a sniffer to go over all the joints or to measure unburnt gas from the flue outside?

Does your analyser have a gas sniffer? Run it around all the joints from the gas valve onwards. Have you done a tightness test? I had a funny one on a remeha which had a gas leak on the inlet connection but it only leaked when the boiler was running, had me baffled for a while as it was passing the tightness test but there was a strong smell. Getting the LDF out helped me find it. The smell could be from the flue? The initial ignition can let a bit of gas through.

cheers, it passed tightness test, went round with a sniffer but only when burner was not firing, I'll probs go back and run the sniffer around and LDF joints as double check while on max and ill defo check the flue- cheers again

is the flue sealed through the wall? or a vent/window near by? could be as already mentioned a little amount of gas from flue on ignition.

check everything!

you dont say which boiler but on anything with a pilot check the tubes and connections to that also check the burner preasure test nipple i once found one undone on a boiler that no one had touched for five years

he said it was a performer, did you remember to ldf inlet/outlet test nipples after checking pressures?

go over everything with ldf when the boilers running unless the flues close to a window which i doubt as you would have mentioned it there's little that can cause this on a performa

Had a Baxi Solo where the gas valve had been changed and the gasket has been damaged, allowing a leak when the boiler was on. Not sure what the Performer looks/is like and what type of boiler it was. But the Baxi valve is outside the boiler combustion case.

it could happen with a performa it has the typical o rings on the gasvalve manifolds
