Visited this one this week. Punter had had boiler serviced recently by GSR Engineer, had been away for a few weeks but on return and using boiler had noticed a smell of gas/fumes.

No it hasnt. The GSR has just not hooked it over. The inner case was protruding forward enough for the outer case also not to fit properly and i think he had tried to force the front case onto the lugs and that wasnt hooked on properly either on the right hand side !

Scary but easily done, I've not hooked them on a couple of occasions BUT I always run my hands around to feel that it has gone on and remove and refit if not.

Indeed, its something i always do..have a feel around ! Further it was fairly obvious there was a seal issue due to the noise levels when it fired up.Another good sign of something not right. Good thing is was a "modern" combi as could have been worse especially as it was fitted in a bathroom cupboard.

It's a bog standard performa(or similar) for goodness sake.
The easiest cover to replace, but I have nearly done that on other boilers and as Blake, always double check.
