Hi Everyone,

My first post.

My sister in law, who lives alone, has a mutli fuel fire with back boiler in her home, this is connected to the hot water cylinder in the bathroom. She has no radiators. When the fire is alight, the pipes start "banging", the only advice she can get is to run off the hot water.

Is there any advice I can offer her?

Stuart

normally there would be a rad to act as a heat sink as well, alternatively try running her fire so it isnt running very hot ie dont keep topping it up with more fuel apart fm thaat it sounds like most old backboilers.

back boiler is probably just that, sqare box and two pipes with a fire in front, hard water will have b'all effect

When I was a kid lived on east coast, water drawn up through chalk, ours scaled up had to have it riven out. It was a box and two pipes though.

I wonder if I could blame that on becoming a plumber?

bigger fire and it cracks off the scale and the vibration clears up any kling ons :)

Probably Needs a couple of heat link/leak rads fitting and maybe even linking a heating system if it's producing wasted energy. Sounds like a DIY install she has been left with so I would get a competent person to put any issues right and bring it up to current standards. Has it been serviced/ Tested recently? Get the ventilation checked and a co alarm fitted as a must.

I wish this had been a DIY job, but she paid a great of money about two years ago. Now she does not have the funds to have the system put right.

When stove hot enough to heat room water is boiling. Tee off flow and return with 22mm pipework and install large radiator in room.(gravity circulation)

More heat going in than going out and starting to boil... Should have heat leak rad / rads in line to make it work safely and comply.

I hope the F&E tank is metal, as it'll be getting a fair chunk of heat!
