Hi all. Can anyone point me in the direction of a soldering mat that is suitable for use with MAP gas? All the ones I can find are rated for use with Propane gas only. They tend to actually go on fire/smoke lots and disintegrate very quickly when I use a MAPP gas fuelled torch on them.

Cheers!

It's the flux that makes them burn. We used to use john ones but just get monument ones now

I only use mapp. Never have any issues. But rarely use a mat.

Trust me, the cheap black own brand ones from PTS. Best solder mat i've ever used. Lasts ages and ages and I use MAPP gas.

no mat will survive direct blasting with mapp, they are for protecting paint work if you apply heat nearby, try turning down the flame a bit

+1 for dickie dyer. I have to say I rarely feel the need to use it

Mats are ok , but you can't beat roofing undercloak. Snap it to size and prop behind, great for when soldering into a corner. And at £1.65 for a 150mm c 1200mm sheet it's chep too.
1200mm Fibre Cement Undercloaking

My heat mat seems to be the most flammable thing I own lol.

Someone once said you have to treat your heat mat like its made of newspaper if you want it to last. This is true.

I use monument but get annoyed when the edges start to fray

Kyle, this will take a bit of work. 8mm tube cut a 900mm length along one side with a grinder.
Prise cut open. Slide one edge of mat in hammer closed . Cut to length

Do same on opposite side

Now cut 30mm lengths of tube for other sides, leave a 10mm gap between bits.

It will burn through before it's in tatters.

I have always used a monument mat but, I believe after being on this forum for nearly 5yrs I have gained tips on how to solder better. So, I gave it a shot on my last install and burnt the clients paint work to bits. Will use the mat in future
