I had a good little job today, replace a shower which the customer had bought already.
Started at 9am, replaced the shower which was relatively painless, never quite as easy as you think but learning to accept this.
The customer came upstairs and said hows it going, I answered and turned the power on F@&K me! what a bang.
I had done everything right, re-checked it but the fuse was an old old old cartridge type 45amp.
The saga began, turns out the fuse is shared with the cooker and the customer can't use the cooker and shower at the same time. I can't buy a 45 amp fuse and can only get a 60!!!
Yep! I know the shower should be on its own circuit as well did the plumber before me and the kitchen installer who wired it all together, I was quite concerned about putting in a 60 amp and having the possibility of a fire
I trolled through my phone and spoke to a friend who was a sparky, turned up put a 60amp fuse in it, did some tests. Looked at me and said what do you think the problem is, **** wiring? he agreed.
The solution is I'm going back on Friday to re-new part of the circuit. It isn't very often that I have a number in my phone thats useful
(Just to clarify: the sparky agreed that it is not ideal, cooker and shower together and does not conform to current regs (as we all know) but providing the customer is aware of its limitations, we have no alternative. Must re-new fuse to 45amp ASAP.
Retro fitting bits is always harder than starting from scratch, is it just me?
