Since my husband replaced the traps on both our cloakroom and bathroom basins, both toilets, new in the last 7-years, have a pungent smell of stagnant water that is filling my house. This is mainly in the cloakroom. It is making me want to move house! There are no leaks visible but I do notice the toilets dribbles water from the holes the flushed water comes from. He is super sensitive about being criticised.

There may be a leak somewhere. Keep looking. Check behind loo and under sinks. Unlikely to be related to the water inside the WC pan.
Or could be "trap seal loss" allowing smell from drain into house. Suggest have a god sniff at the plughole area.

Thank you for you reply. If I sniff the toilet bowl, the smell is definitely coming from both toilets.

Very unlikely to be coming from the toilet bowl itself I'm afraid.
I thought he changed the basin traps (which are completely separate from the WC pans and cisterns).
Keep looking (sniffing) I say.
Do you have a trusted lieutenant who could verify the sourc ? Senses of smell are very individual. Remember to ask open not leading questions of the other person.

It just seemed the smell appeared after the basin traps were changed. I have even drawn out toilet water which didn’t smell but it’s the maybe the part of the toilet going into the drain?

Why did he replace the traps? Was it a first attempt to cure the smell? One possibility is that he replaced the traps when he first thought something was not right but misdiagnosed the cause and the smell has been getting worse.

The trap in the cloakroom was replaced about 8-years ago and it started then. We had a new cloakroom suite about four years ago and when the toilet was removed pending replacement, the smell had gone. We had a new bathroom suite about four years ago and that was fine until about 10-months ago??!
