Could anyone tell me if the distance between the coil in/out apertures are standard across all domestic tanks please.

The coil is often bigger due to regulations, in newer cylinders, ( top connection is higher ) but bottom connection is often similar distance from base of cyl to centre, usually about 100 mm approx. Some, but few, have coil lower at bottom. If your old cyl is fairly recent you might be lucky, but better to pick one up somewhere where you can actually measure it first.

A decent plumbing merchant will be able to take your measurements then order one to suit.
If you don't need a cyl urgently, u can also order one with other connections or extra ones where u want, for little more, if any extra money. U have to expect some alterations to existing pipes may be needed.

the old cylinder is 1050x450 and about 13 yrs old, fingers crossed it similar. I found one online from copper cylinder.co.uk its much much cheaper than any merchant around here. Its a DIY job so I want it to be as easy as possible

13 yr old is indeed fairly recent so u might be lucky. That is a standard size. Even to a pro it makes sense to use virtually identical replacement if possible. Pity online they dont give u details of coil measurements etc. I personally would buy one I could look at first. Beware corrosion, if that's why u have to renew. Consider stainless steel open vented if a water cause, but lots of copper ones corroded due to anodes fitted inside them which were supposed to protect but had opposite effect.

The reason I have to change is it because two years ago the essex flange which feeds the hot water to the shower was leaking due to my dearest hanging clothes on the pipe coming from it which made the flange loose. When I called a plumber to change it he damaged the tank with his grips rubbing on the wall of the cylinder it causing micro perforations. I had to repair the tank with cold steel however it was only a temporary repair and the flange now has a lots of crusty stuff around it. I want to change the tank and try and take a new connection from the vent pipe but below the vent Tee so its the first hot water draw off.

Essex flanges leak as heat, esp near top of cyl, destroys the " rubber" washers. Touch the pipe & it leaks. You can order a cylinder with 1" tapping near top. You may want to use a Surrey flange or Warix flange on to top of cyl, or pipe by proper method so to hot draw off for air free supply." First hot water draw off below tee" does not mean that that will not be affected by other draw offs, as it will. All that really matters is that shower can't suddenly get hotter, hence thermostatic.
