i have a cast iron stench pipe that runs to the height of my house i dont think anything goes into it as my bathroom is downstairs at the back can the stench pipe be removed or does it have to remain if it can be removed or shortened do i need a filter or anything

It will be a vent pipe. This is required, a. as building reg requirement and b. vents your drainage, preventing negative pressure (vacuum) and trap loss, to enable all your waste products to flow freely away. If it aint broke then don't fix it.
Cheers
Jack

i need to shorten stench pipe as cast iron pipe is not very good badly rusted b i am thinking about putting a porch up and it will be in the way.so is it ok to shorten and how long should i leave it
thanks

it should normally clear yor eaves away from windows and vents to take the sench away from your home, shorten it and all those lovely sh*tty smells will flow into your front door. Replace the lot in plastic and if need be offset the pipe away from your porch. your local building regs officer will give you all the specs you require free of charge normally and they can be helpful folk, if you dont wind them up.🙂

as you are calling it a stench pipe, think about the stench coming from it if you shorten it to nose level or below. The reason it is high is that sewer gases escape to atmosphere and you cannot smell them. If you have other vent pipes, depending on their position you can cut it to any level you like and cap it, make it into a gully trap if the porch is outside, or as GasMan says, fit a Air Admittance Valve (Durgo valve) if it is going to be internal.
You could always re-direct it round the porch.
Probably best consult reputable plumber who will be best placed to give advice once he/she sees what is needed.

If nothing goes into it, it is most likely the head of the drain and will be needed to ventilate the sewer, which means you wont be able to fit an air admittance valve right? might be wrong though.
