Hi I have a ST 50 Oil burner which has the following problem. It purges and then lights normally but then burns with a very sooty flame, it is also very noisy. I have tried increasing the airflow by turning the airflow adjuster clockwise. It was originally set to 19 and I have increased it to 30 without any noticeable difference.

Any ideas?

Yeah, get someone in who knows what their doing and save on oil.

It is due to be serviced at the end of the month, unfortunately it cannot be done earlier as the engineer is fully booked until then. Until then its not worth running to heat water hence my interest in getting it going as a stop gap until it is serviced.

your engineer wont thank you for messing with it. chances are you could be suck back pocs in the flue or some other issue, it pays to get servicing done in the summer, not in sept when all the boilers start breaking down

Actually it was my engineer who suggested increasing the airflow by adjusting the Air Damper on the unit.
