Hi,
I saw on YouTube a plumbing company always installs a Magnaclean and a strainer on new boiler installations, is this overkill or a good idea?

Hi Ian

I would say it's overkill, if the system is that bad/dirty that the PLUMBING company thinks it needs a strainer in addition to a magnaclean then maybe the system would benefit from a flush, either manual or power.

I would add that a Spirotech system filter does filter particals down to
  • Very small particles, from 5 μm (= 0.005 mm) and up are separated and removed
And alot of others will perform in a similar way.

I have seen it done especially on gloworm and Valliant boilers combis and system which rely on a pressure sensor they certainly don't like a dirty system , but any reputable installer would throughly clean a system before fitting a new boiler or after installing a new system. Cheers kop

A good magnetic sludge filter should incorporate a fine strainer there are a few on the market - if you cannot find one reply and I will check my records
Hi Rob, I have a magnaclean and my system is clean, I was interested in what plumbers thought about having both over having just a magnetic filter.

Hi Ian, non magnetic strainers are good bearing in mind the amount of 'plastic' pipe fittings and components in heating systems. Any fine debris can block the narrow pathways in modern boiler heat exchangers. A good combined unit is made by Trappex. I was heavily involved in the development of magnetic filters with a number of uk companies from 2000-2010 NOT Trappex tho so this is not a sales pitch !
