Strange bathroom tap

Hi,

New to the forum so just like to say hello all.

Joined as I'm a bit stuck and in need of your help.

Moved into a 70's built property that has the original green bathroom and quite possibly original fittings. We are making do until we can afford to rip out the bathroom and start again but thought I would replace the washer on the hot tap that's been dripping for a couple of weeks. Easy or so I thought.

First problem was getting the handle off as there was no screw to retain it. Finally worked out it was held on by some kind of upside down U clip. Soaking it with WD40 and a bit of levering and hey presto.

Now the fun bit. Could someone advise how or what I remove to get at the washer. It seems to be a chrome ring with a slot either side for a tool. This chrome ring has an internal thread lower dow. It also partially obscures the bigger nut on the valve I thought I would need to loosen.

Do I just turn the larger nut on the valve to remove or is the chrome ring securing the valve in place? If so, how do I get it all apart?

Never seen the inside of a tap like this before but then it is from the seventies.

Looks like the chrome ring is supposed to screw off to allow you to get at the brass works. I think I have removed some.
You could try to tap the ring in an anti-clockwise direction to loosen it so it screws off. Grips might work on it, but the teeth will damage it.
But a long socket might work to screw the works out without touching the chrome ring.
Make sure you have the tap spout held firm when you try to turn the works out.

The internal thread on the ring doesn't go all the way up making me think it may well have to come off first. If I try and remove the valve before the ring sods law I'll break it or strip a thread.

Is there a special tool for removing the ring?

I don't really want to replace the whole tap.

I'm going out on a limb here. I suspect it's a Pegler (based in Doncaster). Send them an image and ask.

I bought a set of box spanners for a similar job (not the same tap) and hay presto out it came.
