I'm looking for a bit of help in identifying a hot water cylinder that I've inherited.

It came with some hot-water type solar panels that I bought second hand on ebay years ago. The chap that removed it said that it was a full set up - I also got a (very simple and crude) control box, a CH pump (nothing special), red expansion tank and sundry gauges & valves. He was a property maintenance hand and had to remove it from a housing association bungalow that the tenant had had the kit fitted to without asking permission. The solar panels etc was what I was after so the tank has languished in my garage for a few years. I'm thinking of changing the CH setup in another part of our house now and remembered the tank as he had said that it's a twin coil and that's what I'm after.

HOWEVER, this is a very strange tank. It's standard size (950 x 450), copper throughout, insulated with about 25mm of foam and has a 1" male BSP outlet at the top. There are FOUR other connections, all 1" male BSP. Two are at the ends of an internal coil (I can see the coil inside when I peer in the top hole). The other two are near the bottom of the tank, almost 180 degrees apart. One goes straight into the tank, the other goes into some sort of pipe/valve inside the cylinder. Looking in through the hole at the top of the tank, I can see what looks like a plastic ballcock right in the middle of the tank, about half way up its' height, attached to a long thin wire rod that goes down to the 'valve' on the floor of the tank. The ballcock has 'Stadium' moulded into it.

This last inlet has a pronounced ridge coming off of it that runs about half way up the outside of the tank (all under the moulded insulation, so it's difficult to see exactly what this is). The insulation is slightly 'wavy' around this part of the tank, almost like there's another coil formed into the body of the tank, but I guess this could just be to add strength. It's difficult to see the inside wall of the tank through any of the holes.

There is a blanking plate for a short immersion heater on the side of the tank, near the bottom.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of tank this is? I can post a photo if needed, but not sure how to do that on this forum.

cant help without pics but my only comment is dont be messing with solar heating unless you know what your doing, as its an uncontrolled heat source, get it wrong and it could become very exciting, esp as you have described sealed heating components or unvented cyl components.

Many thanks for all the quick responses.

The solar panels have long been installed on a separate system and are very happy in their new life :smile5:, so no need to worry on that front. I didn't use this tank in that set up; it's a bit of a 'leftover' and I'm wondering if I can make use of it elsewhere. How do thermal stores function?

As I can't figure out what it is, that's probably what will happen. Seems a shame though, as it was only in use for 2-3 months in it's original install, and it's sat in my garage doing nothing ever since. There's very little scale build up inside it.

Can anyone recommend a twin coil vented cylinder of this size (or up to 1200 tall) for use with a heat-only gas boiler and an open fire back boiler? Not looking for anything clever, just well made and easy to fit.
