I bought a strap on temperature guage from B&Q to help me diagnose a boiler problem. When strapped to the Flow pipe from the boiler it registered 80 ish C
My Cylinder Stat has been mashed by a screwdriver at some point in its life. It does work but you cant see where it's set. So I strapped the guage to the hot tap outlet at the top of the cylinder.
My problem is that I do not know what it should read. I believe the stat should be set at 65c but the stat is positioned about a 3rd up from the bottom. If I set the stat so the guage reads 60c the tap water seems too hot.
Does anyone know at what temp I should set this to please.
BTW if anyone wants to know, the guage costs nine quid.

water temp normally at 60

Well my gay sister knows alot more about strap ons than I do and she advises you take the strap on thermostat back to that well known, expensive Diy store and with the money you get back, buy a new cylinder thermostat and replace the damaged one you presently have
Hot water rises and the idea is to give you a full cylinder of adaquate hot water,as said we set around 60 deg, this temp will be achieved were cylinder thermostat is fitted, usually a 1/3 of the way up cylinder
The water at the top of the cylinder will be higher and below lower but if you run a bath,it should average out around 65 deg,if you only have showers, you may find you can reduce to 55 deg ,thus reducing water temp at top of cylinder and ammount of hot water stored at the higher temp
This is why I await a programable cylinder thermostat like heating side,so you can set differant temps,at differant times, through out the day
In morning or evening you would have a higher temp, when showers and baths taken and the during day water temp would be lower, just for basin, sink and washing machine use ect
In my old house I had two cylinder thermostats at differant positions higher and lower and wired through a timed relay, thus using each cylinder thermostat at differant times, now I have a combi,so not a problem

THANKS AGAIN Puddle.
With the trouble I've been getting I am keen to follow you down the Combi route.
Probably this Summer.
So I wont be spending out on a cylinder stat.
The stat does work, I just need to set it blind. Hence the Guage for help.
