Stuck Click Clack Waste

Hi Guys

Does anyone out there know the best way to release a stuck click clack waste plug when its stuck in the closed position and is there anything which can be done to help prevent it from happening in the future?

Take the trap off and try and push it up from underneath with a screwdriver. Or try to see if you can spin it to unscrew it from the top. The you can take out the spring mechanism and inspect.

Take the trap off underneath and push upwards with anything that will fit .
I will not fit them , just fit the captive or flip type wastes these days

Unscrew the cap from the barrel. However if it is brass and you use bleach on it then there is your problem.

Thank you all for your valued replies, let me put you right in the picture I’ve just ordered a replacement tap for the sink in my bathroom and it comes with a click clack waste, don’t ask me why but the chrome on the swivel spout started to become speckled but not on the main body of the tap, anyway I’ve decided to replace the whole tap.


The one which I’m taking out had a popup waste, the lever type and I wanted to replace it with a similar one.

The sink is a fairly large one and so had a larger type tap fitted but on doing an internet search most of what I’ve been finding in the size required appear to come with these click clacks wastes.

I also read they can be a pain to free up if they get stuck so decided to find out on this forum what the general consensus is about them.

I have to say I’ve never tried the flip type ones as Townfanjon has suggested but can’t help thinking if that’s the way to go because taking the trap out should the click clack get stuck will be a real pain.

While I’m on here does anyone have any easy remedies for removing the quarter turn cartridges when they start to leak, that’s if one can be found with all the correct measurements.

Before now I’ve had to scrap the whole tap just because the cartridge has been welded in with lime scale, giving my age away here but replacing a 2p (old money) washer is a darn site cheaper than throwing the whole tap away, ok so the tap took a few more turns to turn it on and off.

How on earth did we ever manage before quarter turn ones, the manufactures are having a field the present day taps when it comes to trying to stop them leaking as any tap will do in time.
