Hi Guys

Attended a customers house to replace old (16 years)for new immersion heater. I could not get the b****r out for love nor money, tried the usual heat, hairdryer, light blow torching to no avail. Didnt want to tug to hard for fear of tearing the casing. In the end I sprayed all the top of the nut with penetrating oil and wrapped an oil soaked cloth round the top in the vain hope it might get down to the threads. Told the customer i would be round to have another go in a few days.

Would be realy grateful for any tips you could give me to sort this out

All the best Plum Bob🙄

walk away from it unless their prepared to sign a disclaimer for possible damage to cylinder.
Ive always got em with blow torch and and 30"stillies.
Good luck

Hi I agree about disclaimer plus checking for availability of exchange cylinder
After heating area as hot as possible try using hammer on spanner, using repeated taps to try and replicate air hammer action, like mechanics have. Worked for me.
Review your Religous arrangements, you may need assistance from above! 😀😀😀

All things considered I will check how my standing is with the allmighty, but in the meantime I will give your advice a shot.

Plumbob

have you tried talking to it?

to be honest you are competing with 16 years of expansion and contraction and 16 years of limescale. Its likely to damage the cylinder so either walk away or get customer to sign a disclaimer, or tell the customer what needs to be done and give him the tools!

Agree, sound advice, some jobs are just not worth the hassle. The tools I will give him.
Thanks Plum bob..

I have always used the blow lamp method on really stubborn ones I heat up till hot and let cool down till cold naturally no damp clothes as this process may act like a form of annealing to the copper around the immersion boss then i heat it again and use a good fitting immersion box type spanner whilst it is still hot mind you dont burn your fingers wear appropriate gloves I apply equal pressure from both sides of the tommy bar if it still does not move apply gentle tapping to the tommy bar its should go . HEED the advice of the other posters good luck turnpin🙂

Is it a top entry one? shove a bit of pipe down the hot outlet and syphon some water off (if there is no drain off), then when you use you blowlamp to heat it up your heating the brass rather than heating up the water in the cylinder. Ive never had one beat me after a load of heat.
btw are you sure that it isnt just the stat in the imersion thats gone? soo much easier to change.

Heat it up till it glows use the box type immersion spanner with the removable bar, once it hot enough hit the bar with a club hammer a few times>

I have never had one move, but I have had the cylinder twist at the opening of the immersion in this case its a new cylinder.
Speak to the client first explain that there is a chance, they may have to change it because the immersion heater has almost welded itself to the cylinder.
Good luck hope you sort it out

I ve got one this week remember to get the customer to move all her own knicks, bras etc out of the airing cupboard themselves, or youll get a bad name when your caught inspecting the goods lol

This would imply that youve been caught before then ????? . Howevor, good advice as such is recieved with thanks as always

Bob

not me ,it was the apprentice, he went as red as the knickers he was holding, had to send him out for sandwiches to recover his composure, lol

at my age, id rather read the news paper and have a coffee and bics than research the customers underwear, and as Ive said previously, most of my lot are well past any need for thongs etc (thank god That said i drink a lot of coffee and need to lose weight. nuff said

Now when i was in the RN one of my lads arrived onboard with a charge sheet that indicated he had stolen over 200 items of wrens underwear. Wouldnt have thought the 4 foot nothing lad, had it in him to sneak into the wrens laundry rooms, however he must have had a bad habit as he could never stay awake long enough to do any work, probably cos he didnt go to bed to sleep lol, bit like one of my works experience guys who were with us recently, late for work and always asleep
