I replaced a worktop reusing the existing sink and tap, and the only change in the syatem is the addition of a couple of ballfix valves. Now the water has a taint and smells/ tastes faintly of TCP. Not a happy customer.
Any bright ideas?

There's no solder, it's a compression joint. I ran water through the disconnected tap tails into a glass and it was fine, no smell or taste.
So it's the tap. I can only imagine some of the gunk in the spout seal found its way into the body when I moved it. The threaded bit that holds the spout down tight was loose and the body of the tap (still attached to the sink) nearly fell off when I picked it up by the spout. Could some of the grease have been pushed back into the flow?
I dunno, but as it only happend after I had worked on it, it's my fault and I have to put a new tap on to get over it.

I think you're being a bit generous. If the original taps are of some age, then your customer has already had good value from them, so why you should you pay the whole cost of replacing them? The customer will end up with something better than they had originally. You might consider pointing out to them that these things happen with old taps when disturbed, but that if they buy (suitable) taps, you'll fit them for 1/2 rate / nothing.

There seems to be a common theme running over several posts in a few of the forums over the past few days. Namely the customers all coming out with the old "It wasn't like that before you touched it" excuse. Do you think it might be open season on plumbers just now, a bit like the Glorious Twelth for shooting birds.

They have been away for a few days and the taint is back. There is a new tap fitted and the taint appears to stop if the water is run for a while but returns when the tap is turned on again.
So there is no solder involved, and it's mains fed. What could be interfering?
