How many people actually take the gas meter offline before they do any soldering on gas pipes, not next to the meter of course? I was told, if I am really that paranoid then just take off the downstream side and cap it. I know it's against the reg but would it give me enough peace of mind? Any advice will be much appreciated. Thx

Hi John. I don't want to offend but are you gas safe registered? The last few questions you have asked seem to point to you planning a job of some kind? If that is the case after reading you questions I would strongly recommend that you get someone with more experience and a qualification to carry out the work.

Hi Ap, no I am not planning to do anything illegal. I've done my core gas safe training and now in the process building my portfolio. I do find this forum very useful for asking advices (for free :) There are many helpful people here and I am very grateful. I am really keen to learn more about this trade, and I do enjoy learning. The way I see it is the more I ask the more I learn, the better my chance when doing my ACS.

Yours humble learner,

John

this question you should really be asking of the gas safe engineer you are going with to do your portfolio imho.

I have and this is what he said. Just want the feel of what others do in the trade.

indeed. if you start going against the regs before you're even qualified you aren't going to know what is right and not imho

Thx guys. You're right. It's the curiosity that got the better side of me this morning. Must be the side effect of those damn Belgian beers last night. It was a silly question in the first place anyway. :-( thx again.

I don't think there are any silly questions,

Sometimes I ask my mate a question, he looks at me and patiently answers. Then I'll keep asking until the penny drops.

We were working the other day I asked him about a vented system and the way he was piping it up, it looked wrong. He said 'it'll make sense' end of the day it did but still spent an hour questioning him though!

Free labour = putting up with questions

Usually cap outlet. Most people i see don't bother unless next to meter.

I like to see the meter removed to be honest, it takes seconds, dont forget your cross bonding! Have a quick look on youtube at gas meter explosions!

Dont think youve done anything wrong in asking this, nor is it a silly question.

Remove it, for all it takes to remove. Cross bond. Peace of mind..

Yeah always remove it myself, just don't leave it out in the rain for a couple hours, it makes some strange noises when you put it back in!

in the real world this is never really done, everyone i have worked with dont do it anyway

bit of common sense is needed though when soldering next to gas meter lol

I tend to just undo meter/pipe union and slip a piece of metal between them, (or a proper disc in the rare case I have one to hand) if I'm within a few meters of the meter. If I'm further than that I never bother. Perhaps I should think more about removing it!

I ALWAYS fit a TECB and remove the meter
