I had to do an aptitude test (stolen from a different colleges engineering department!) as well as key skills tests (maths and english) when I applied for college. They were all multiple choice iirc.
The aptitude test bit was a joke more or less - a combination of basic logic/theoretical physical problem solving, some basic maths (if a bathroom is x dimensions, how many tiles will you need etc), a couple of questions were based on user instructions for fault diagnosis on a boiler (checking you can read and understand that sort of document). I say it was a joke because there were 50 questions (some taking a fair few minuites to calculate) and we only had 45 mins to do it, and also because I twice had to call over the the invigilator to point out errors in the questions! Ie, none of the multiple choice answers were correct.... These questions were the ones were you had to physically measure things with a ruler and they had obviously changed the size they were printed at when they were photocopying it lol.
I never did get told what my results were but afaik no one failed.
