So my hot water tank is barely 3 years old and a recent service check tells me the tempering valve is on the way out

It's a Hydroboss brand from Tradelink and I'm keen not to replace crap with crap

So what are the best brands of valves on the market ? The plumber recommended AVG

AVG are fairly good, but they all have their issues.
Hydroboss weren't a bad unit - they all have to pass Australian Standards Testing, which would be fairly strict regarding Tempering Valves.

What was the reasoning behind diagnosing the valve faulty?
Somewhere, it is stated, they should be replaced every 5 years, but no one does unless they cause problems.

Do you have fluctuating water temperatures or water not hot enough - below 50C?

If not, I wouldn't change it.

They do have filters which can block and cause issues and non-return valves that can fault.
They are not overly expensive - what were you quoted on replacement?
