Went to a networking meeting yesterday to try and get in with a local builder, he told me that he does extensions and they need gas registered engineers as they tell customer they need a new boiler.

Now I was shocked that this builder was reccomending a new boiler for what could be 1 or 2 new radiators.

And then he was saying that the quotes were in the region of £3500 and £4500 like for like.

Now I know that it is impossible to say if he was scamming his customers or not and was he working it out properly or just saying new boiler straight away, but something didnt quite sit right with what he said, basically it seemed like he was reccomending every single customer that they needed a new boiler and that he had a bit more upper class customers as they had a bit more money.

Never had experience with this sort of thing but is there big money for the lucky few that have contacts in the right places or is it a case of having to lie through your teeth.

OOOh that will be a new boiler, kerching, plus a power flush, kerching, and a magna clean, kerching, that will be a a whole new system, kerching.

There are many occasions where fitting a new boiler makes sense when building an extension.
The old boiler may have to move with all the problems that can involve or may indeed be too small for the additional radiators. It may mean a different upgraded system being fitted.
These things are all sorted out at the beginning of the project so the customer is well aware of the costs.
Little point in spending lots of money on a major project and skimping on the heating which may need done in a few years anyway.

so is it a case of where you live, the people you know and a little bit of luck then as to wether you make it as a plumber, aswell as the obvious, being good at what you do

if this is the case then these training centres are telling the truth "you could make £60,000 a year", however if you haven't been in the trade for years, you don't have the right contacts and you aint any good at what you do, then more likely to be £10,000-£20,000 per year.

A large proportion of the extensions i do need a new boiler but its always known about upfront due to either reposistioning,too small change of system so no springing it on the customer. but i also do simple ones were just a extra rad was needed.

For example went to one the other week builder said they either want old one moved (old potterton he) or a price for a combi went for thecombi on the end
