One of my customers has a thermal store. He was going to have me rip it out and put a combi in but now he's split up with his missus and just wants me to replace the Ideal Classic in his garage that feeds it so he can sell the place quick.

I know how they work but I can count on one hand the amount of times i've seen one (very rare around here). Anyway, my question is, would a standard WB condensing open vent work with it? For some reason he has a twin channel timer (from new) too. I was under the impression that thermal stores require v.high temperatures which possible a new boiler couldn't obtain?

This is a pic of the setup.

If he's selling, just repair the existing boiler.
New open vent boiler would be an easy swap, as would be a Combi ( £170 scrap for old cylinder)

£170? Can u take my scrap please?

The programmer will be one for the boiler to heat the store (pump on the left) and one for the CH pump on right. I would simply install an ideal logic heat only And then in that small white box disconnect the pump over run and connect the pump direct to the boiler. You will find that the pumps over pump initially but will settle down. Done quite a few of these. Renew pumps normally too and service the blending valve, re pressurise water hammer arrester.

Check immersion port for leaks.

When installing new boiler just turn off the service valve (it's on the 15mm to the cwsc ) and drain system. It will be a lot o water and pretty manky too.

What's wrong with the ideal classic ?

The heat-ex is rotten. It's never been serviced and in a horrendous state. It's in the garage and the flue is only about 2 inches from a doorway too so there's that. (done when they built the house, no less)

I was banking on the combi job, which he was def going to have this summer but his missus left him and he's selling so he just needs to get the cheapest possible new install.

Sounds pretty straightforward then, aside from maybe the wiring but i'll work it out. ! Thanks!

Nah, cheapest option would be whip Ideal Classic out, put new open vent in, flush, wiring. Done in a day. Housebuyer gets shiny new WB to swoon over.

Combi not that quick or easy. Flue through roof, tricky condensate, obv way more labour. That was the original plan, but like I say, he doesn't want to do it now because he's selling up in a few months.

Blimey open vent for open vent any day, alter 3 pipes and fit a condence. Bit of wiring..Giz a job.
