i have to fit thermostatic mixer valves on to childrens basins in a nuserary problem is the hot water is from a fortic wih only a few feet of head and the cold is mains preasure so get no mix due to preasure differnce suggestions on a post card please

Hi Steve,

This is going to cause you a headache mate.

I would phone a couple of valve makers and see if a pressure reducing valve can be fitted to the cold mains, as not to disrupt the operation of the valve. Check what pressure you have at the hot. Will crap no doubt.

As its a fortic, im assuming there is hardly any room to fit a CWSC??

You could put a pump on the hot, and reduce the pressure on the cold to try & match it ?

Could a pressure equailising valve work? Or would there not be sufficient pressure behind the hot?

just had a thought about this and want to run it by everyone how about if i put a tank con into the tank of the fortic to provide equal preasure cold to mixer
my first thought was the tank isnt big enouch but then i realised its only supplying the same amount of water be it ,just hot or mixed any thought much appreciated

If you fitted a tank connector to the fortic, even though its a cold supply the connector would have to be just above where the hot water is (bottom of CWSC part of fortic), thus would come out luke warm, rather than cold? Although i suppose the mixer would compensate this and mix accordingly. Maybe im just talking rubbish.
Also (just thinking) what if the cylinder stat suddenly failed and the hot boiling water expands into tank?

thats true they do get warm maybe a fe and e tank might be a beter option? ALTHOUGH ITHE STAT WOULD BE SET LOW

all stats are resetable overheat protected now so probably not a problem
same applies to any tank if stat fails and fills with hot

Is fortic cylinder in question feeding any other hot outlets in nursary ?
Is the mains pressure good,giving good fill time to tank ?
Is cylinder heated by immersion or boiler ?

If the stat is set low (i assume you mean on the immersion heater or cylinder stat) wouldnt there be risk of legionella?

imersion great main and six minature basins used soley for hand wash

Some TMVs can handle unbalanced pressure, others can't. Some are suitable for gravity, others aren't.

I think the Altechnic Caleffi ones are suitable for your application but you will have to check the specs. You may need to fit a pressure reducer to the cold side.

I have been fitting the Caleffi ones for the last year to new bathtubs where there is mains cold and hot gravity and all has been OK so far.
