read in yesterdays paper that a tenement flat in glasgow was raided and thieves ripped out the copper from the incoming gas main, luckily no one was in the flat but if it was winter the boiler would have kicked in at 6pm and caused an explosion!! also read that stealing copper and metal is now one of the most common crimes in the city(Glasgow) and how they wrecked an old statue just for £100 worth of lead !

Trouble is there's no deterrent. There was one in the local paper last week '31 year old caught red handed round the back of an old pub, thats about to be turned into a hotel, with lengths of copper pipe he'd stripped out. Went to court and got away with a conditional discharge. The developer went spare, said if he caught anybody he would discharge his shovel across the back of their head. :)

Lot of cable thefts round here as well, some even caused house fires.

Lots of Churches copping for it too! Mind you i was on revites in the dodgy parts of Newcastle 25 yrs ago and the thieves were taking it out as quick as we could get it in!!! LOL

My other half works in the rail industry and they have thefts every night from london to edinburgh. It causes nothing but trouble

The Bridges in Sunderland, fitter welder was welding away when it packed up, went to look at the generator chained on the back of a pick up and it was gone, chains cut and welding leads laid on floor.

we are not even half way in this recession youll know when were half way as interest rates will start to rise, then you will hear the screams of pain from borrowers and a sigh of relief from savers

My other halfs mom is a Transport Cop and most of her time is spent dealing with Wire thieves and the like

My cure would be heavier penalties to compensate for the labour to replace and fix
