Thinking about becoming Gas Safe

Hey guys, I'm thinking about becoming gas safe. I'm a plumber at the moment running my own business. I never managed to do my gas when i was employed and its been a regret ever since.

Ive had an offer from an ex colleague to shadow him one day a week to build up my portfolio. Since going it alone I decided not to pursue being gas safe as i worry that shadowing someone for a few months and then taking the tests would get me qualified but not competent if you know what i mean?

Has anyone here done it this way?

I'm not concerned that I would be dangerous as i am always careful in every walk of life and would never tackle anything i'm unsure about. I just worry that with the small amount of experience gained would it be worth me doing it?

depends if you think you will get much gas work as it will cost you initially.
i think getting someone to teach you is the hardest part, so you might regret passing up the opportunity

Do it. It's another string to your bow and a lot of people would love to have the opportunity to shadow someone.

Once you have passed then get on as many different courses as possible like fault finding, manufacturers courses.

ACS is just a test to see if you are safe the other courses won't give you experience but will help a lot.

Also you are in the right place here as there are alit of knowledgable people on here who help loads.

R.Oak what's the deal with doing your gas now - do you have to go to college for a year inc portfolio before sitting your acs?

I done mine sort of that way and it's best thing I ever done. One of hardest parts is getting someone to shadow n building portfolio so IMO get it done

Do it mate. I find it incredible the amount of people that ask if you're gas safe even when you're going to do a wet plumbing job. I guess it gives them additional reassurance. Where in Dorset are you??

My advice is do it. One of my few regrets in my business history is spending so much time moaning about how hard it is to become GSR instead of finding someone who will teach me, doing my training and cracking on with it.

Got my first day of supervised gas work booked in on Monday. It will be a long day but there's 9 gas appliances to service across 4 properties. 9/50 jobs done by the end of Monday. Got a few boiler swaps lined up too. The deal is the guy supervising me gets paid, I get to keep the customers (they are my existing ones) and I get closer to getting registered myself. Everyone is a winner - he will get a fair bit of cash from me over the next few months and I will be able to sit my ACS before the end of the year all being well.

If you have the opportunity then go for it. There will be a lot of people who would give their left nut to have the chance.

If hes willing to help you gain your gsr, do you think he will be open to the odd phonecall once you are registered?
