No matter what i do i have people not paying , disputing paying or just simply not wanting to pay .

Latest is

I was called by a letting agent to do some work on a toilet the landlord i already cover his work . I told them can they confirm that the landlord knew i was attending which they said yes and confirmed he will expect an invoice from me in email .

Done the work 3 weeks ago and back then sent the invoice to landlord as instructed to by the agent as he pays trades direct which he has done in the past with me.

No payment so sent a reminder and hey ho the response i get is sorry I'm not paying as i never instructed the work to be done.
( even tho water was pouring into the flat below).

3 times i asked the agent if they knew the landlord was expecting me on each occasion they confirmed .

And hey ho awaiting payment!!

This game is getting worse

Now it's them that need to pay, invoice them.

Agree to meet on site with letting agent. If no ones paying you need to undo your repair.

This is why I love working in houses that have oil boilers. Simple click on the fire valve and no heating. "Of course I can come and look, but I will have the money you owe before doing anything by bank transfer"

If you already have a working relationship with the landlord i think hes being a c*nt for not paying you. I'd up my charges to him and also make sure there is a written instruction/money up front next time.

This year I have decided is a ' Don't give a Rats Year'

Decided to give 4 Estate Agents, 2 Aged Care facilities the flick..... and a School.

All due to their demands being 'immediate' and payment terms ' at their discretion'

I'm actually getting satisfaction out of telling these people that I will no longer work for them unless they are willing to pay within 14 days.

My favourite sparkie's trick is to sneak into their house when they are out and paint all the lightbulbs black. That way when they turn the lights on it'll actually get darker and they'll panic and have to call you out at any cost you choose.

Now, what kind of equivalent thing can us plumbers do?

This game is getting worse

Slow payments, non payments when work has been carried out correctly is very upsetting. We have been in this position many times over the years 1982 till now. When I was younger I used to get angry
as did my 2 business partners. We learned ..the name of the game is GET THE MONEY if they are short of cash MAKE A DEAL even if it’s a bit short of the full ticket. Going to court takes ages and costs loads and is dirty...I know my Mrs is a barrister. Then tell everbody you know at your merchants local pub what a screw up your debtor is. Had one who tried to bounce me ..went to his door..no joy
so I told him and his mrs I was going around all their neighbours to tell them all about him...she paid up

The main issue is the Aged Care facilities and the School have outsourced their accounting / book keeping.

From what I know, the School is having money taken from their accounts almost immediately and the contractors and others are waiting 60 days from the end of the month for payment.

The outsourced company is holding onto money, for up to 90 days, in their accounts before paying out that money.

I used to do a monthly account for the school and be paid within 7 to 14 days.
Not any more!!!!

I realised very quickly after learning my lesson to never take work from these 0800 companies who just ring round all the local plumbers, their just sat in their bedrooms earning huge amounts on top of your normal invoice. Then I found that they were tight as anything trying to get money out of them for that invoice and I’d have to threaten them every single time with court action before they pay so I gave up with them. I just tell him if the customer needs to work tell him to ring me direct and they generally hang up.
