My bathroom sink hot tap has just started making a thunking noise when it gets turned on. The cold taps in the house are also making a loud noise, also when other hot taps are turned on in the house the bathroom tap comes on by itself. What is the problem, please?

any tap that comes on by its self is due for replacement or repair or you need a priest to exorcise your poltigiest

Thanks, Stevethe plumber, I thought it did need replacing but it is quite new and this will be the second cartridge type tap on my basin in 3 years. I thought these sort of taps lasted a long time? The first one cost £120 and the second £75. If I didn't have a new sink with a mono hole I would go back to using old-fashioned taps! Thanks anyway.

If that is the case, there is probably nothing wrong with the tap.

Firstly, the tap which comes on by itself - is this a mono mixer? If so, there will be some means to tighten the action.

The noise you describe - this could be a check valve making the noise.

Are the hot and cold pressures to your mixer taps balanced? If not that could be your problem.

It could be water hammer - (a water hammer arrestor can be fitted to cure this).

Hi WHPES the tap is a mono mixer. It now comes on whatever other tap is turned on - hot or cold. Hopefully my plumber is coming today - he says it sounds like the pressure- but of course it is snowing hard! Will let you know the outcome, thanks for your help.
