I am about to replace the flap valve on a close coupled toilet. I understand it is advisable to use a new doughnut washer. Could anybody please advise me what the purpose of the doughnut washer is, other than to prevent water splashing back from the toilet basin inlet to the underside of the cistern when the cistern discharges. I assume the washer inside the cistern between the syphon and the cistern base should stop water leaks from the cistern itself.

Thanks

It creates a seal between the cistern and the bowl ie stops the water running onto the floor.

Try it without one and see lol

It's to give a watertight seal between cistern and pan

ceramic to ceramic does not create a water tight seal, so you need a rubber washer to create the seal

Thanks to all those who gave me the benefit of their replies. I suppose I rather assumed that the syphon shank itself would reach into the top of the bowl, and hence conduct the water into the bowl with little spillage other than perhaps some splash back. It sounds from what you say that there is more to it than that which, no doubt, is why the need to have the cistern truly upright for a good seal is stressed. When I start the job will find the problems I guess.

Its surprising how much water does leak out of those dount washers sometimes!... I recently had a battle with a Ideal Standard donut washer =[ It took 5 attemts to make a water tight seal!!! I think some designs are better than others with these things.

There's a few types of these washers for different toilets, i keep a few of each type on stock.

Also take care when screwing the cistrn to the wall, If cistern not sat square onto bowl it may open a gap up at the front and cause a leak
