Toilet flush - needs replacing?

Hi there, wonder if I could get some advice? The plastic connector between the toilet handle and flush mechanism has come away, it appears to be sheared off. I presume this thing lifts the plunger that allows the cistern to drain into the bowl.

What's the best approach to fixing this? Can I locally repair the connector? Or would the best approach be a new toilet mechanism, or even a new toilet?

I'll be looking to repair this myself - any advice appreciated.

First isolate the mains water to the cistern either by the isolation valve for the toilet if one has been fitted, or the stop tap for the whole house. Then, as you look at the toilet, the green syphon in the middle of the cistern has a white plastic nut on the left hand side a 1/3 of the way down. Undo this nut and the right hand part of the syphon should pull up and out. Take this part to a local suppliers I.e plumb centre or city plumbing, you may be lucky and they may be able to get you a replacement.
