Toilet tank spontaneously cracked - Advice please!

Hello all

We have recently moved into a rented property, which had a new bathroom installed. Had no problems, went away for the weekend and came back to a wet kitchen ceiling and wet walls. The electricity was also out (I suspect because there was a socket where the water had been leaking), went upstairs to find the toilet was the cause, and the toilet tank has a large crack in it! This was 100% not here before we went away! I am worried we are going to get the blame for this since its new? anyone else know what could of caused this

Have a search on here as its been discussed before. Could be poor fitting or a sudden change in atmospheric pressure.

I have had a read and found a lot of people say if its cracked from the bolt it could be poor installation, but it's not like that. I will see if I can get a pic

Manufacture fault, something fallen against it. Wouldn't expect it to crack there if an installation issue.

Also looking at the screws it's not that recent an installation.

Definitely nothing fell against it, just completely spontaneous. Was no visible crack prior to this. Is it common for this sort of thing to happen? absolutely devastated as only lived here a few weeks and feel we are going to get the blame

Replace it before the landlord finds out! Unfortunately it's one of those "Yes you did!" "No we didn't!" situations. Don't feel bad as these things can and do happen. But at the end of the day it's only a thing and no one died. Except one of my tetra's but that's not relevant.

Looks like it's a B&Q bog, perhaps Jamie could replace it for you if he's handy enough?

Or one of the lovely, well groomed and housetrained chaps off these esteemed forums!

Already contacted the lady in charge of our house, was in a panic as electricity was out. She was fair enough with us, just hope it doesn't get nasty as we will argue till the earth blows up. I am not taking responsibility for that, the last tenants were pains apparently, perhaps they caused a crack inside it and its decided to go on us

Your landlady should have insurance. You were out and no signs of deliberate damage. Your rent is high enough to cover insurance and excess . Don't worry it's not your problem.

Thanks, she did mention insurance on the phone. I'm just worried about the plumber, is this something that could be either way. i.e a plumber could look and say it could of been caused through no fault of the tenant. I'm just worried there going to look and say something must of fell on it, ive seen alot of plumbers online saying 'toilets dont just crack on there own', this one did! :disappointed::disappointed::disappointed:

Plumber cannot make that sort of judgment! They can infer but they are not always right.

When you look down inside the cistern, does the crack start at one of the 2 bolts that are either side of the flush mechanism in the middle?
If so, then the CC bolts were probably over tightened when installed and it will be obvious to a plumber that the cause is that.

Proberbly a hairline crack in the china ..landlords have insurance for accidental damage (or at least they should have) regards Turnpin

could it be caused by the floor moving ?
