hi,
my room thermostat is in my downstairs hallway. the problem is that the rad in the hallway is prey big for the size of space.
When we had the system put in there was an adjustable thermostat on the rad, but the engineer took it off as apparently we’re not supposed to have 1 in the room there the main stat is…
So, what is happening is that when it gets cool enough for the heating to start up, the hall warms very quickly, making the room stat turn the system off..
How would I alter the rad so it heats up slower (or whatever it would do)? I presume if I take the cover off the end where the rad thermostat once was, I can turn the end?
Which way should I turn it? How much should I turn it? SHOULD I EVEN TOUCH IT?? Would it work??
Thanks for your help, Dean

The system may not have been balanced.

Feel both pipes of each radiator. There should be a noticeable difference between the two, but this difference should be approximately the same for all rads. The hotter of the two pipes will be the same for all rads; it's the cooler pipe which could vary.

Do this when the house is heating up, so the rads are hot.

I may get some stick for this, I think its STUPID that you don't have a TRV where the room stat is, I have never agreed with this, for the reason you are posting on here.
Either get the hall heat requirements checked and perhaps you could get away with a smaller rad, or put the TRV back on (that's what I would do)

I'm completely with you mate, this causes more problems than it cures. Especially when even a 400mm x 400mm single is fitted in a contained hallway.

cheers Chalked, I have got into plenty rows with BG and Corgi over this, I think its corgi that started the stupid idea in the first place

It all comes down to common sense really, if you have a small room with a large radiator in it it then don't put the room stat in there or correctly size the radiator.

What is the point of putting a thermostat on a radiator when if they have it on low then the heating will never turn off.

My own house is a good example of why this doesn't work in the real world.

hallway about 8ft wide by 12 ft long, front door and 4 others. open staircase leading onto landing with 5 doors .
one 450 x 450 singe. So undersized. Roomstat on a wall 10 ft from rad.
With no trv the room gets to 20 degrees easily, and turns the rest of the house off. So, you turn up the stat and have a hallway at 22 degrees and still the hall gets up to temp and turns the rest if the house off too early!
so, you throttle down the tiny rad and then the hall ends up under heated and the rest of the house us boiling.

so, fit a trv, leave on number 2 and hallway controlled nicely and rest of house evenly heated.

i hear this problem lots in new properties.

on a side note, I now have a Salus wifi stat and have tried it in various room and positions and found the best for even heat throughout the hose is................. Window sill in the kitchen, which had a trv fitted!!!

i would say the problem is more to do with the balancing of the system and the fact the hall is small and the room stat should go in the main living space without a trv on the rad as the regs.

a trv over riding the room stat will cost alot of money, just fit the room stat in the best position.

By choice I fit the stat in the lounge. That's the area you're most likely to sit in and want to be comfortable in.

Seems like a lot of different opinions on whether to fit a TRV in the room with the Stat.....?

Is there no definitive answer?

A matter of choice?

it always seams to cause problems does this one,
In the perfect world we all want to live in, yes I suppose you should conform to the regs and leave the TRV off.

Trouble is we don't live in a perfect world LOL !!!!!!!!!!!

and another independent heat source ( Save money when oven is on ! )
