How does insurances work for trainee gas installers
if your working free for your portfolio in gas,how does the liability insurance work.
the trainee is the installer not his tutor/gas safe plumber

is there a type of insurance for trainee acs plumbers ?

no the trainee is only to undertake work under the direct supervision of the gas safe engineer and as such work is to then be checked so the trainee is like any other employee the only difference is there is no financial renumeration

i know this much, but if in the event of death of the client from work install by trainee the gas safe plum goes to jail .

surely each person should have liability insurance for it such event occurs ?

bit extreme scenario there but basically the gas safe engineer is responsible in ensuring the work is to standards and regulations so if death occurs then it is because that particular engineer has been negligent not the trainee
that is the same for any trainee they are under the supervision of the competent person
not sure what you are trying to get at here but all trainees in all jobs are under the supervision of the expert and as such are covered under that persons liability insurance
how could you get liability insurance for something you are not legally allowed to do without direct supervision

the bottom line is can the plumber risk it some say no it not .
maybe this portfolio work should take place in the training centre ,
then they is no risk for clients.
also the long wait trying to find a plumber to work for.

if i was a client and a plumber turn with a trainee and said the trainee is to fit
your boiler today , i say no thank you or perhaps the plumber does not tell the clients this, ?
there is always human error

the only training is in the training centre when it come to gas
what's a extras 3/4 weeks
or 3/4 mths trying to find a plumber to take you on

sorry mate

you cannot build a portfolio in the centre as this does not truly replicate the situation you face in real installs
the centre is there to tutor you in the rules and regulations but this is only part of the process as with most thing you have to perform the functions in real life scenarios otherwise you will make mistakes when faced with real installs or servicing etc
and this is why very few engineers are willing to have portfolio builders with them its time consuming and a strain on their time and resources
but that is the process
1/do theory in center
2/find engineer to build the experience to be an engineer
there is no short cut so i would advise anyone wanting to do their acs do not sign up unless you have an engineer ready to take you out with them otherwise you are wasting your time and money

this comes back to apprenticeships for on site 4/5 years
and colleges for 4yrs this way the trainee gets the knowledge
but not at the maybe cost of the clients /Guinea pig

it just my view

some 20 years ago i saw a so call pipe fitter in his 40/50s connecting a 2inch gas main pipe totally wrong inside a hotel on the ground floor
i pull him up me being a plumber, then he was put on something else ,
if i did not notice this the hotel may not be here today

human error

- Very sound advice.

I also don't agree that you can learn what is required in a training centre. Any person working to build their portfolio is dreaming if they think on day one that they will fit the boiler.

It's more in tune with an apprentership - prove that you can fit a TRV, etc without causing a leak and I'll give you some pipework to do. Get that right and I'll let you hang the jig for the boiler on the wall, get that right and I'll let you cut the flue down to size....................................... eventually they'll get to pipe up and commission the boiler (or be told that it's not working and pick another trade).

Even though they may be doing the work, it's no different to an apprentice in that it's you that is responsible for checking that it is done correctly, therefore it's your liability insurance that will need to cover them.

Hi guys I was on a blue flame course which promised the world in about 22 weeks.....I had to get 3xinstalls 3xbreakdowns and 3xservices of cookers, boilers, fires, water heaters and remove and replace 3 meters (installs and entending pipework)..with all of the photo evidence and still a full time soldier this took almost 14 months and a couple of quid.I had my own liability insurance as it is not fair on your mentor/guru but thay have to sign an agreement or should do if the firm or college has anything about it.
Not the quick course earn lots of dosh i thought but i have a job when many don't. hope that was some help if not sorry for butting in.
