Training and benefits

Hi there, my boyfriend was made redundant about 2 weeks ago which was actually a blessing in diguise as he now has the chance to train as a plumber which he has wanted to do for years!

Because he signed on for Job seekers allowance he has been offered a free 6129 tech cert and NVQl2 course in Waltham Abbey, Essex run over 36 weeks. It is starting on Thursday which we are both really excited about! We only found out about 1/2 hour ago so we can't get hold of anyone at the job centre for advice until Monday.

My question is does any of you kind people know if he is entitled to any benefits whilst doing this course? It is held on a thursday and friday and he would like to try and work as well.

hi as far as im aware if the course is classed as full time on the course details then your boyfriend will not be able to claim jsa, however if the course is classed as part time he will be allowed to claim.

the crazy thing is your allowed to work for up to 16 and half hours a week and still claim jsa, but not do a full time course that is 15 and half hours a week.

i know this as i had same problem when starting my course.

when i questioned it they told me it doesnt matter how long the course duration per week is, just if the course is classed as part time or full time.
