hi,

I am currently thinking about retraining and since looking at a couple of websites i have been swamped with emails and phone calls from different training providers all claiming to be able to train me as a plumber. some seem quite reasonable others seem a bit expensive, but all claim to be able to help me attain industry recognised qualifications. could anybody tell me if any of these companies are genuine or if they are all a con. many thanks

Hi Balloo,

I didn't qualify for college training so did a course like those companies are offering you. I think they do a reasonable job at training you to work on new-builds, where everything is planned and there is nothing you can damage.

But if you plan on going to do maintenance work, you will quickly see how much they do NOT teach. Figuring out how a house works is the first problem, then there are 1 million different reasons for a problem to happen and those guys in this forum have seen most of it and the amount of stuff they know is incredible. There's stuff I don't dare approach because I simply don't have the confidence and fear ruining the client's carpet (at best).

The best way to learn is to team up with a guy who's been doing it for years. However times are tough and there aren't many willing to spend time training somebody who could become competition in a short while. So... it's a bit of a "tail I win, Head you loose" story.

Good luck, whichever way you go.

To do with this information but a bit different I Was wondering if any experienced plumbers or some one who has completed it could help me. (I would make a forum topic but I need 10 posts). I got my 6129 (i know now its nothing without NVQ) a while ago and have been working since. I am with my 3rd employer now as my others didn't cover what you need to gain the 6189 (NVQ) qualification. I am enrolling in college where i got my 6129 and they are making it very long winded to pass this. I need to do maths english and a it exam which can not happen till next year! I also have to complete a lot of tasks that My site I am on may not too all of. I then rang a few training centres like 'able skills' and 'loci' they give me a big price £1,650/£1,700 but say that they just need to do 4 on site visits and then once seen confidence on site and completed tasks given then they pass you off... This sounded too good except the price. I mean how quick can they come out and see me and how long does it all take? MY boss will give me a pay rise as soon as I have my NVQ and then I can look to level 3/gas. Any one on here who has either completed this with a college or training centre that can give advice, it will be much appreciated. Supposedly the training centre said i have till before christmas to register for the 6189 because after that my 6129 is going to be useless and would have to resist the replacement!!!! Why can this all not be simpler!!!! I am doing work with plumbers and there level but getting minimum wage still!
