Here's one for you all. Just been to a job where the customer was complaining that the immersion heater is cutting out intermittently. This immersion is fitted to an indirect cylinder and had a programmable timer fitted to it.

Tested the power coming through the programmer and has 230V coming through to the element. Removed element and looks in good condition (only 12 months old). Minimal resistance through the element (thought it might be a crack or something).

My gut feeling is that the element and thermostat need replacing but don't really want to do that and find it's not the problem.

All suggestions welcome!!

Well if it is an intermittent fault I would go for an item that is required to make operation movement in the circuit
So in this instance I would, (after checking all external wire connections are sound) go for the thermostat and time control, could be a faulty contact on either
However I would go for immersion thermostat first, as I have had this a few times however due to low cost of two items(presume not mains seven timer) and your time involved(probably can not be charged going back and forth) I would change both and be done with it
Ps if it is mains seven timer than will probably be thermostat so I would just replace that

Hi. You sound far more considerate than i. However i would change both immersion heater and stat, wire up bypassing the timer and let them suck it a see for a week or more. In the event of it being ongoing you will know where the problem lies. Good Luck
