The story is
The family next door to myself are getting on a bit hence the post.

They have an old baxi solo that's been fitted and worked for years.

I did not install it or have never worked in there house at all

about January last year (18 months or so) he mentioned that his boiler was loud in the morning and I said in passing conversation that it needs looking at (he does not know what I do for a living).

I have noticed recently a loud ignition boom and have also said that he needs some attention to his boiler.

Long story short, Monday this week boiler fired up and woke the street up at 6.00 am and has been doing the same all week also at 6.00 pm in the evening.

I passed him on Wednesday in the garden and mentioned it, The loud boom and he said its only in the morning its ok as they have hot water and heating when they want it.

Long post I know but my kids are in bed and i will be soon, but we know what needs attention.

I have offered free services for repair (from a local chap) (me if I have to come clean) but he is adamant all is ok

This evening I heard 2 loud bangs, the first got me of my arse and I even saw the second one

Flames out of the flue

I am GSR but the helpline is useless

If you see the flames i would suggest you get him out there to witness it himself soon b4 he aint able to anymore

Wow mate I'd be knocking the door thought we had a duty of care if my neighbours boiler was like that I couldn't sleep have you seen the news this week in Manchester.

ring transco, tell them what you saw they have rights of entry,if flames are coming out of the flue then take it further

Surely you need to do something yourself about this? As a gas safe engineer I can't see how you can watch this going on to be honest.

Go & block his flue, he will not have heating & hot water so will have to get something done, "simples" or explain that if the explosion does not kill him you shortly will.

Can't you film it and put it on here for us to see.....

On a serious note come clean tell him what you've seen and that you are GSR. Advise him that you are willing to have a quick look as a kind caring neighbour (not least because your little one are living next door) if he refuses then call national grid.

Keep us posted.

Protection to live and property , is my oath as a gsr. Get on the dog and bone to transco , if he has a outside meter I would go cap it off.

there isnt much he can do if they refuse to let anyone look at it. Has an offence been commited no then gas safe dont want to know only transco can force entry So unless the happen to be passing at 6 30 one morning how will they know. then theres the getting on withy your neighbours scenario one of mine didnt talk to me for five years becausein his eyes i cost him a new gas fire in mine i probably saved his life

would probably just come clean on this one, explain your concerns and show him the flames coming out of the flue

If there were a meter outside I would cap it off if I said I could fix it the chap would not listen. I was actually thinking of breaking into his house and pinching the apple out of the bowl on the table and I may get arrested for theft because there is not one other body concerned one single bit.

Believe me I have confronted him and called what we think are authorities.
I am no further forward.

This is the society we live in though, no one wants to take responsibility, everyone buries the head in the sand, something happens and then the finger pointing starts,

The most annoying aspect of this is an accident could be prevented if people acted, not the neighbours (whoever they are, qualified or not) but by the authorities.

You've seen something that could be potentially dangerous, because you've seen this, as a Gas Safe registered engineer, you are required by law to do something about it.

You cannot just simply ignore something that you have seen.

You've offered to have it looked at, he's refused. This just leaves one option, a call to National Grid, tell them what you've witnessed. They will send an engineer out, he will cap the gas forcing your neighbour to have someone look at it.

Gas Safe won't be interested, it doesn't fall within their responsibilities.
