My TRVs seem to be on the out side of the rads, is this correct? I thought they would be on the in side so that you adjust the LSV on the out for balancing the system.

I also get a lot of noise when the system gets hot and I saw a post where someone said maybe a TRV the wrong way around could cause noise.

newer trv are bi direction so doesnt matter whether on flow or return
depend what age your trvs are

also check the pin hasnt stuck in the off position

House is about 6 years old so I think its fair to say that they're the same age.

chances are there bi directional look at the side of the valve for arrows cast in should be arrow both ways to indicate bidirectional

is sound when system hot or heating more likely to be the pipes expanding against the joists and floor boards than the valves
If this is the case, try turning your boiler down slightly or at next service ask if possible to turn gas pressures down slightly

Provided the TRVs are two way (double headed arrow on the side), it does not matter which end they go. All the LSV does is control the flow rate through the radiator; so it does not matter which end it goes.

Does the noise go away if you open the TRVs to max. If so it could be that the system pressure is too high when the TRVs have closed down. If this is happening you need an automatic bypass in your system.
