Hi fellas,

Way back last year I did the unvented course and since then have not been near one .....on Monday have a commission job to do. Am reading back thro various course notes etc but is it best to stick to the commissioning procedure in the instruction booklet which I presume the customer will have from when it was installed . Any tips?

Follow M.I.'s and if you didn't install make sure you at least cover your call out if possible before looking at the cylinder because any problems with the install will require a second visit.

Do not accept the word of the plumber or householder that any changes required will be made until you actually see them carried out.

Your signature = your problem if anything goes wrong.
 
check all safety vavles, non setting cut outs are there and fitted correctly, check discharge pipework size and run and termination, open both relief valves and check flow down discharge is suitable, check temp and pressures of water, fill out benchmark and above all else follow manufactures instructions.

Just out of interest, how come the original installer is not commisioning the cylinder?

i would be asking loads of questions and go in assuming that nothing had been done right, going through everything with a fine toothed comb
 
Make sure they understand that it will cost if not right for this visit and next one to complete. I'd be double and triple checking everything if I hadn't done one for a while. After all it's your expertise and the expense and time you've taken to get qualified. Hope it goes well.
 
Thanks fellas - not sure what the story is with the installer, think the customer has tried contacting him but without success. Could be I'll be walking into a nightmare on Monday - I'll let you know how it went.

Hope it's not like the one I went to......wouldn't normally get involved but a very good custards sister so I had a look, she had had 2 bathrooms done at the same time with big shower heads etc by a polish plumber! Anyhow s plan with no ABV powered by a Avanta system boiler, overheat by passed on cylinder stat! PRV in 15mm terminated like a combi, double elbowed backed to wall above utility door! No G3 no benchmark, boiler flue not even made good after removal of BF boiler, gas safe did not want to know, as I was complaining not the custard!

I would not touch it if it hadnt been installed by a qualified person. It has to be notified to the council as well as it is a notifiable installation.

In theory that is the ideal thing to do but what happens then?

A consumer is left with a possible bomb in their home and nobody willing to advise or make good the bad workmanship or take the money for a positive opinion on what could be an installation any of us would be proud to claim as our own?

The competent person is not obliged to go to the job let alone certify it as good, if he doesn't go how is he going to make the courses etc pay off?

Should he find faults he can charge his normal hourly rate plus a bonus to put them right, if the consumer decides to live with the danger he has the option to report it to the local building control as a hazard.

I repeat my earlier advice, if possible collect the call out fee before looking at the installation, I know it can be very hard to collect the money after condemning an installation some consumers can view the service provided as being akin to a free estimate, this is a professional providing a service make sure they know that.

Managed properly this is an opportunity for the competent person to earn something off the installation also for a consumer to end up being a happy end user of an unvented cylinder with the potential to becoming a long term customer as these cylinders require a service / safety check every year.

one thing i always check is that the cylinder stat shuts the zone valve off to the cylinder when satisfied

Lol only fit megaflo's but look after a few range tribunes, so have both T&P reliefs on the van, I always advise they may not reseat, but usually if they don't I see it as a good thing to change due to age anyhow.....custards are mainly ok with this as long you advise before hand etc....

if its a make I don't have I advise of any possible issues!
