Hi,

I'm a newbie to the site and I had a quick question about vertical radiators.

I'm thinking of replacing an unsightly rad on the ground floor of the house with a fancy designer rad, however the pipework for my current rad is surface mounted and comes from the ceiling downwards (not very nice to look at).

As mentioned I would like to install a vertical rad but the only ones that i have seen have the valves at the bottom, so my question is can you mount the vertical rads upside down (so reducing the amount of pipework on the surface)? The only downside i can think of is bleeding them properly?

Am I being really stupid or is this a viable option?

Thanks

Stuart

Hi stuart and welcome to plumbers forums......

Interesting question..look forward to the replies...

I assume that it would be self bleeding with the valves at the top. The bleed nipple would become a mini drain off.

I cant really see it working as the heat would short circuit across the top of the radiator.

You could bring the pipes down behind the radiator to hide them or chade them into the wall.

Ok thanks for that, I never thought about the water "short-circuiting". Looks like I will have to run the pipes down the back of the rad.

Thanks anyway

Stuart

I'm not a huge fan of TBOE connections on radiators. On the grant work that we do the spec on new systems calls for this unless the customer requests otherwise and we seem to get a lot of complaints about system noise.

Also aesthetically I think a vertical rad would look better with both valves at the bottom.

Glad ive read this as my brother in law wants a rad fitted with both pipes fitted to top of the rad as they come through the ceiling..(vertical rad)

Hi, If the waterways allow? you can thread a piece of thin plastic pipe down inside the rad as far diagonally from other top tapping as possible, make a push fit joint to union. This will stop short circuit across the top of rad. Good Luck

Whats TBOE? is that one valve at top and one at bottom?

You can get vertical rads with a tube in-built that goes from the flow tapping to what would be the top of the rad. This is used to make the water flow to the top of the rad and return at the bottom. If you used this type you would need to reverse the F & R from that stated by the manufacturers. ie return would be via the tube at the bottom of the rad because it's upside down.

Why don't you give Myson technical office a call, they may put you in the right direction.

When I used their vertical decor radiators I had an issue with poor heat transfer. They solved the problem.

i have seen a couple of these panel radiators, with both feeds at the top. they work, i can only assume they a small pipe inside one of the feeds, that makes the water flow internally to the bottom of the rad, and then give circulation.
