quick question.

i'm looking at a pay rise in may

30 yr old apprentice, level 2 finished, currently collecting evidence for level 3, i am quite advanced and work on my own most of time on bathrooms own van and tools available, and along side the boss on heating jobs and kitchens. been in trade 4 yrs, 2 yrs with current boss and 2 yrs into apprenticeship.

wales is my area but work around cheshire and shropshire depending on location of jobs. Just wondrering on what money is earned for someone in my position and what i should be asking for really.

currently on min wage....

i think thats a valid question but we are busy and im working on my own a lot as is he, so i would assume the work im doing daily is making him more than the 46 quid minus dedusctions he is paying me. typical day last week was first fixing a kitchen, then changing a syphon in toilet, then install a towel rad. similar things on other days or helping him with fitting kitchen, then it may be boiler repairs, which im doing with him (often helping with this as he is old school does not know how to work multimeter and we do a lot of boiler fault finding in college and ive anlged my studies into this).

so i should think it would represent the money i make him, anyways back to the point it doesnt matter what he can afford i'll sort that out with him, but just want some examples of what other lads are on that you may know of in same postion or similar to me. newly qualified, 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year, 4th year would all help me get an idea cheers people.

well what i would do in your case is ask for a raise explain what you do ,if he still says no tell him your going on your own ,then i dont think he will like the competition and then go on your own you sound competent good luck

totally depends in this climate, if your enjoying your job, wait a bit. i'd imagine you should be on 14 - 16k but too many variables too list!

good luck

cheers for the advice phil and shaun this will be the route i take eventually but looking for something while the level 3 is completed :( can any of you lads rememebr back when you were apprentices, the jump for when you started to when you were on you level 3 was there a wage hike or am i just wishful thinking ha?

I am not sure but to give you a steer there are JIB rates set at various levels you could give it a look .

cheers billy, looks like i should be hitting the 8 quid mark, as an apprentice or 9 pound odd as an adult trainee. obviously im not gonna go out guns blazing but would like to come to some sort of comprimise on some sort of pay rise as i havent had one for the last 4 years :( (2 with him)

If you work for a JIB reg firm then when you get your level 3 you should get ba pay rise to advance plumber I think, (check the Jib website) however if your working for a oneman band it will be as somone on here has already said whatever he can afford to pay you, taking on an aprentice is a hard thing to do and its a 2way thing, you may be earning him some money now but when an aprentice starts he/she is a liability and costs you time and money to train up ,all you can do is ask him for a rise and if you dont get one then just sit tight., everybody seems to want to be a plumber atm, aparently they earn £75k a year

if you're just with him until you've collected enough evidence for level 3 and then you're planning on trying out setting up on you're own then he's worth more to you than your extra couple of quid an hour so yeah keep him sweet. you're pretty close to the finishing line.

sound advice

sound advice lads - i will take it all on board.

newbie i have no plans to issue an ultimatum, so i doubt very much my job would be at stake but i know what your saying.

Think I was earning £6 or so going into my level 3. Was just doing private work on evenings and wkend. If its a gd job providing alot of good experience, and if you think your valuable, ask for a payrise. They wont want to let you go if your any good.
