Hi all,

I'm looking to enter the plumbing trade to supplement my dads drainage business, There seem to be hundreds of courses out there and all seem to offer all different things. What would everyone recommend on a courses to attend and the key qualifications which are needed! I assume these are City & Guilds and NVQ as these are the most recognised. I can't give up my current full time until I have gained some training. so your ideas, previous experiences of courses/companies would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

check out whats on offer at your local college most of them will do night courses for the full time worker.

Whats your current day job?

I currently work as a financial adviser but am really fed up in the industry. An oportunity has come up to support my dad and eventually take the business on nearer his retirement! I have checked my local college in Reading but they only offer courses to qualified individuals! So very limited, I have looked at things like Ics, train4 and other local courses but just want to make sure I acheived some sort of relevant qualification for my money and for the my future in the industry!

Hi Angellm8te
I did City & Guilds 6129 level 2 with OLCI in Bristol, they do have other centres around the country, I don't know where abouts you are.
I paid £5621 back in July 2008 and that included Part P and bpec unvented and NVQ2.
I really enjoyed all the learning and people I met.
The tutors were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly.
Good Luck

Getting into a college for me seemed impossible at first when I was in that position, it was a chicken and egg scenario, you can't train until you are working, you can't work 'till you are trained....
I looked inot the private centres but really didn't have that can of money to spend.
I got around this by getting unpaid work experience and reading the text books, then getting into my local college.
However that does leave me in the position that I don't have as many qualifications, college was only City and Guilds, then I got unvented (G3) a while after, now I am looking into getting the other bits eg energy efficiency (part L), water regs, nvq etc.
