Hello all,
came to do some minor work at an old property and found that they didnt have a stop valve for the mains.. not to worry I thought, I'll pop out and switch off from outside.

Upon opening the round plastic cover outside, I found a plastic mains pipe with a strange looking bit where the Key should fit, unfortunately my standard stopcock key doesnt fit at all!

I'm told the water board replaced the pipes and may have helpfully changed the stopcock so that the old metal keys with the square lugs dont work.. does anyone know where I can appropriate one of these keys, i do a fair bit of work in the area and having to call thames water out to switch off the water everytime i need to do a job is going to be a pain in the whatsit.

cheers,
Jay

Turning water back on is often more of problem than turning off. The nylon socket into which the key fits, comes detached from spindle below and central screw strips its thread. Maybe by design to protect apparatus below. In these circumstances an adjustable, cam type, basin wrench will prove useful.
