Hi,

My pipes keep making suddent bang noises every now and then, like someone's suddenly stopping a tap. All my taps are turned off.

I had an engineer come in the other day and he drained all the central heating radiators. I myself turned the water off from the mains and drained all the taps then switched them on starting from the top floor but this hasn't helped.

What could the problem be and what will happen if I leave it as it is?

What is the cost of repair?

As SimonG says could be a shared main. Does it happen at the same time every day? Are you close by any big consumers like factories?

I live in a mid terraced house. I have access to the stopcock which is in my kitchen. I don't live near any factories.

Is it a serious issue?

Any cold water tanks in the loft? Checked wc cisterns?

No, I have a combi boiler in my bathroom, but it's inside a cupboard.

What am I looking for in my toilet cisterns? I've noticed it makes no noise once the main water is turned off, but in general when the taps are off it makes a noise every few minutes.

Your looking for a passing float/ballvalve, a trickle into your wc pan, or an old ballvalve failure, but if it’s every few minutes it’s either going to be a trickling pan or not related to your property.
