We're currently having some work done extending the kitchen and the plumber has relocated the water meter. However, it has come to my attention that permission should have been sought from United Utilities beforehand. In addition, the meter needle now rocks back and forth 180 degrees as if there's something wrong with the water pressure, although it doesn't increase the consumption digits. This never happened before it was relocated. I've spoke to the plumber but he doesn't seem to be concerned about it. My understanding is that the needle should be static when no water is being used and that the meter needle can only rotate in one direction. Is this the case?

Thanks

Andy

United utilities are supposed to be informed before any work is carried out. Then if you wish to use a private plumber who is Water industry approved they can move the meter if it is being relocated inside the house to a new internal location where it can be easily accessed for reading and service purposes. The local water board authority will want to check to see if its kosher anyway after the jobs complete and they will inspect the meter and location.

They need to do the work, if you are moving it from an external position into the house.

All the information on this can be found in the following Link:

Thanks Carl86. I've read through the United Utilities website and it confirms that my plumber should have made me aware of the need to inform them of my intention to relocate the meter. Not sure what to do now as the meter has already been moved. Also can't understand why the meter rocks back and forth when water is not being used?
