hi, i have a conventional boiler with an electric ignition. we dont use the timer as it doesnt work. we just switch on at the wall for heating and hot water to the tank. however recently the boiler wont always fire up first time, also sometimes it will fire up after a failed attempt if u give it a smack with your fist, weird i know but it works, anyway the boiler is only 7 years old and has been serviced. the boiler sometimes runs for hours but recently goes off after 10 mins. so i have to keep resetting all night to have a warm sleep. whats the problem and how do i fix it?

Is the heating system sealed, and if so is there enough pressure in it?

It's not a Potterton Suprima is it? They often have a fault like that.

Sounds like you need to get the service engineer back again.

Is the heating system fed from a tank in the loft (vented). If so is it full?

Otherwise it will have a red pressure vessel somewhere for the feed and expansion. There will be a pressure gauge by this which should be at 1.5 bar usually.

if its a sealed system there should be a gauge on the boiler if the needle is in the red then it has no pressure in the system

Check tank in loft, bleed all bleed points and rads.

Most likely problem with controller. Get service engineer.
