REDSAW

just had this message from my brothers tenant!!

Hi i just wondered if you knew any gas safety engineers who could remove my gas meter cheeper than £65. E.on will take it away once its removed.

I don't quite understand do eon need to move the metre or can anyone
Are you allowed to disconnect it and cap stand pipe?
Thanks. Lisa

whats the legalities though?
not permantly removed one before.
can we cant we...

Being as it's Eon's property I think Lisa is between a rock and a hard place....

I thought the standing charge for a gas meter was abolished years ago.

I carry out quite a lot of CP12 for gas meters only, if the tenants were being charged Im sure the meters would have been rmoved years ago.

They will go down as unregistered gas sites if they are left for a while. They still will have a service ID and MPRN. It will come up with this info on xoserve and they will remove it in the end.

ah-arrrr, there you go then!!

i disconected the gas water heater about 2 years ago, there is no other gas appliance in the property and she has been paying £11.-£16-- a month since then!!

as long as you leave the meter there i think you will be fine, if they do say anything say there was a leak on the pipe work :D and they didnt want it repaired due to no appliance being on gas

Cap it and post it . They own all the assets tho. Ecv bracket and outlet Union. Send old Union as the want "their" one back too. I'm assuming it's the same as commercial as the suppliers even want the upstream control valve and won't accept a new one as its not their asset.

Recent guv changes effectively reintroduced thestanding charge that some suppliers did away with.
For a level playing field of like-for-like charges for customers they had to bring it back in..

Had almost the same call this week, customer is paying 68p a day standing charge for the meter and has no gas appliances. Don't know which supplier but they want £150 to remove it, he's a pal of mine so has asked me to remove it. I checked with my local Gas ACS centre and they said if you have MET1 no problems, if you haven't it's your call. As long as you make sure the meter is left for the supplier there should be no problem.

You can take it out and leave it but it would still have a live service and an MPRN so they will still be charged

People who dont use gas but still have a meter now find themselves exposed to a standing charge.

This is because they have a live supply point and in the mixed up world of gas supply, the gas supplier is paying a daily hire charge to the meter owner (meter asset manager) for the rental of the meter and ongoing maintenance. There is an additional element for the maintenance of a live supply to the house.

If customer doesnt want supply they can have meter removed for which there may be a charge. After all, do any of you go to a house and do work free of charge? Unlikely,,so why should suppliers?

If customer has meter removed and this is recorded on xoserve then after a year or so the gas distributor for that area will initiate a procedure to cut off or otherwise isolate the service to the house.

If this involves digging on the main and physically disconnecting then at some future point, if gas is required, the customer will likely have to pay for a new service.
