Hi, i live in a block of flats, i had a new washing machine fitted 1 year ago, every time i go away for a while and come back when i do the washing in the machine there is a smell of eggs or something similar!!! this is happening frequently.
can anyone help??

Sounds like the trap is drying out of water and then the smell comes, possibly be the trap and waste pipe at wrong fall/angle.

is it possible, if there is no single check valve on the hot and cold pipe from the washing machine, this could happen through cross contamination???????

nah! your all miles of,
what the smell is, the same as 100% of every other washing mashine in the land, it is a sump thing.
when the machine has not run for a while, like a week, they smell of rotten egg. if you pull out the grey pipe and snif you will see what i mean.
you will smell it also in the drum itself so no check this and that will make a blind bit of difference.
the only way to sort it is, if your going away wash a rag in vinigar and lemon, fill the mashine up with water again then drain of.
there you have it.
or just put up with it unless you get home and do a wash with old towels etc your first wash will have a bit of musty smell to them.
whats really amazing is, i dont know how our w/m works atall, but i have a very good engineer and she knows all about it. lol.

Temperature!! if you only do 'cool' washes, bacteria grow. Suggest once a month (assuming all the other angles raised here have been covered and checked) do a boil wash - even if the machine is empty.

check that the waste hose is fitted correctly it should go up from the machine to as high as possible then down very important if its stabbed in to the waste under the sink as waste water can run back into the bottom of the machine ive had several corregated hoses solid with grease and fat or washing up water getting back into the machine
