What's all this gumph?

Pan connector going into....? Which is it joined onto? Does the pan con have fins or is it pushed into something before the socket?

Need to change the bog. But is there anywway to shorten/cut back this set up if needed or am I stuck with a pan connectors depth into that socket and the potential of needing a spacer between wall and cistern if I get unlucky?

Yep cut the collar off and use an standard pan connector
