Says Marley on it and half inch. Looks like solvent welded plastic leak fodder.

I decided to leave it be and changed the float valve from inside the cistern. If I were to have to join onto some of this in the future (although i've never seen it before so prob not much chance) would it just be a philmac?

And also yeah I dd noticed the remanents of a previous float valve with no obvious reason why it's there AND another half inch hole further along for good measure.

It's high pressure plastic glue takes around 24 hours to dry
 
How would you join onto it? Cut it with plastic pipe cutters and whack on a philmac/similar?

Yes or you can get comp adapters but it's very brittle
