Hi Gang, got to do a quote for installing a combi in a 3 bed house.

It looks like the house originally had an airing cupboard years ago, then a combi was fitted, and that has now been ripped out, all the pipework is there it just needs a new boiler hanging and connecting up. House looks like a repossesion, there's a bit of a language barrier as the new owner is Turkish and speaks minimal English. So that's the background.

I'd like to know which combi to fit (I know a cylinder would be the best option but he wants a combi!). The house has 7 rads, 3 bedrooms, one bathroom. Most of the online calculators don't seem to accomodate for combis, so what do you recommend?

The size of the combi is more about what hot water flow is needed, even the standard 24Kw model has plenty to spare when it comes to heating 7 rads. A 30 -35Kw model can modulate for smaller heating systems so I don’t see a problem, as I say it's just about what HW flow rate is required. Just don’t fit a combi in a restaurant when the chef keeps the hot tap running unless you want the customers to be cold lol

Yes, I agree from what I've read it's all to do with the hot water demand. So you think a 24kw combi will be sufficient for just the one bathroom and kitchen?

Yes don't see why not, I inherited a Worcester 24CDi when I moved, bit slow to fill a big bath but brilliant for showers and copes with 8 rads with no problems. I'm not intending changing it until I have too.
Martin.

Nice one, was looking at the worcester greenstar 25si or do you think the 30si would be a safer option?

stick in a baxi duo tec 28 with mechanical time clock and simple room stat after all part of you commisioning procedure is to explain how it works to the customer, you try explaining a worcester digital programmer and room stat to a normal english speaking homeowner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

engineer friendly. sollox. spent 45 minutes on hold to a technician on friday before putting the phone down, and ripping it out, and getting ready for an avanta install.
how can you go wrong with a boiler that has an end user instruction manual of 2pages of a4 instructions!!

Lots of people, young and old, like modern technology, mechanical controls are not as reliable or versatile and can even cost more. Many modern combi boilers offer internal mechanical or electronic timers or the option of any external controls. While wireless room stats may cost a lot more than the standard type, installation is quicker and no lifting carpets & floors to run cables or chasing out walls and making good afterwards. Lots of boilers are not what they seem, the same boiler can hide behind several badges with different prices, example: Vaillant Pro 18e, Glow-Worm Ultracom 18 HXi & Saunier Duval Xeon 18HE, and there are many more examples like this, Potterton’s that are really Alpha boilers etc. They are all basically the same boiler but I know installers who swear by Valliant’s but wouldn’t touch a Saunier Duval with a barge pole.

yeah but, the avantas arent turk friendly, not with flashing 1/2 dots and 1,2,3,4 etc easily in view, you try explaining that. My only complaint with avantas is they should have cover over the led screen, stops spurious phone calls for the first week after installation, despite explaining everything to the custard and adding 2 dots = all ok and working, dont call me about that!!! 2 days later ring ring, what does 2 dots mean:eek:
